The Student's Handbook

Interval Hero trains your eyes to read the jump between notes, so sight-reading stops feeling like one note at a time.

  • Open Game Mode

It guides you one small step at a time.

  • Read, then play

Later on, you play the note into the mic.

  • Keep going

Pass a level and the next one opens.

Signing in for the first time

Your teacher set up your account. You just need to sign in and start.

  1. Get your username and password

Your teacher creates your account and gives you these. Keep them somewhere safe.

  2. Open the app and log in

Go to game.interval-hero.app, choose Log in, and type them in.

  3. You’re already on your teacher’s roster

They can already see your practice and set you tasks. Nothing else to connect.

  4. Open Game Mode

The main thing to do: open Game Mode and keep going. It starts easy, one new idea at a time.

  5. Practise near your piano

Later levels ask you to play the note, so sit at your piano or keyboard.

Your Home screen

Home opens after you sign in. It shows what to do today and how your week is going. Get back to it any time with 🏠 Home in the menu.

  1. Jump to

Four big buttons at the top: Practice, Game Mode, My Progress and Assignments.

  2. Today’s goal

A ring fills as you answer questions today. Tap Change to aim for 10, 20, 30 or 40 a day.

  3. Streak badges

    Practise on days in a row to earn a badge at 3, 7, 14, 30, 50, 100, 200 and 365 days.

  4. Daily Quest

Until Game Mode is finished, it points to your next level. After that, it sets two short tasks from your weakest areas.

  5. This week

Your Weekly Challenge and today’s Ranked Practice points (Pro, so ask your teacher if it’s locked). An unfinished Ranked Practice session shows Resume.

  6. Your numbers

Reading Level, accuracy and day streak. Once you’ve unlocked App score, this week’s points sit beside last week’s.

One path. Keep climbing.

Pass one small level and the next opens. You don’t have to choose — just keep going.

  1. Level 1

    5-Note Range

Read notes in a small five-note space.

  2. Level 2

    Chain

Follow bigger jumps from note to note.

  3. Level 3

    Guide Notes

Find your landmark notes on the staff.

  4. Level 4

    Find the Start

Find the nearest guide note, then count to the note.

  5. Level 5

    Challenge

    Read against a timer.

  6. Level 6

    Play the Note

Read it, then play it on your piano.

  7. Level 7

    Chord Inversions

Read a whole chord shape at once.

Tip: click a note to hear it

Not sure what a note sounds like? Click or tap it to hear the pitch.

Retries are allowed

Get one wrong and try again until it's right — good learning, even though only the first try scores. See Your score.

The practice modes

Game Mode walks you through these in order. Once passed, practise any of them on their own tab.

5-Note Range

Read the jump between notes inside a small five-note space. A gentle place to start.

Chain

Each new note starts where the last one ended — watch the direction and size of the jump.

Guide Notes

Learn landmark notes, like Middle C, so you always have somewhere to count from.

Find the Start

Put a C near the blue note (no more than a 5th away) on its exact line or space and press Check, then choose how far it is and which way. In the last level the C is never drawn, just like real sheet music. That is how you find the first note on the piano.

Play the Note

Read the note, then play it on your piano — the mic listens and checks the pitch.

Challenge

Answer as many as you can before the timer runs out. Good once you know the notes.

Chord Inversions

Read a whole chord shape — root position and its inversions — instead of one note at a time.

Playing notes into the mic

In Play the Note, you answer by playing on your piano instead of tapping.

  1. Allow the microphone

Your browser will ask, the first time — choose Allow. Said no by mistake? Ask an adult to turn it back on in browser settings.

  2. Put the device near the piano

The mic needs to hear you clearly, so place the phone, tablet or laptop close to the keys.

  3. Play the note you read

Read the note, then play it. Interval Hero listens and tells you if it matches.

How your score works

Only your first answer counts. Fixing a wrong note afterwards helps you learn, but doesn't change the score.

Example · five questions, one fixed after a retry
  1. 1First try
  2. 2First try
  3. 3After retry
  4. 4First try
  5. 5First try
4 out of 5 = 80%

Four notes were right on the very first try.

All 5 correct in the end

You fixed number 3. That’s good practice; the score just stays at 80%.

Before and after each session

  1. Ready to start?

Most sessions open by asking Sound on or Sound off, plus treble or bass clef for Chain, 5-Note Range and Chord Inversions.

  2. Session complete

A popup shows your first-try score (in Game Mode, the level result). View score breakdown opens a table of what you got right, weakest first; Hide folds it away.

  3. Review your mistakes

Under the breakdown, Review mistakes replays the intervals you missed as a quick drill. Guide Notes and chord misses have no interval to replay, so they’re left out.

Ranks

Climb through ranks — Rookie, Apprentice, Adept and beyond — grown from your accuracy, questions answered, and practice streak.

Leaderboard

Your studio may have a friendly leaderboard, with a Ranked side and an App score side. You only appear with a display name if you choose to set one.

App score: points for speed

Once you’ve finished the path, App score turns everyday practice into points. Get it right first time, and the faster you answer, the more you get. It needs Pro, so ask your teacher if it’s locked, and you choose whether to switch it on.

Unlocking it

  1. Finish Game Mode

    Every level passed, all seven.

  2. Put the hours in

5 hours of practice, or 2,500 questions answered.

  3. Read well

A Reading Level of 8.5 or more (see My Progress).

  1. The offer

The moment you qualify, this popup appears: Turn it on or Not now. Change your mind any time with the switch on the Leaderboard’s App score side.

The App score unlocked popup: the points table and the Not now and Turn it on buttons.

How points work

With App score on, a clock counts up in the top-left of the staff on every question. Answer right first time and your points appear beside it, like ⏱ 3.4s +16. A wrong first try or Show Answer scores 0, and the clock pauses while a popup covers the question.

  1. The timer

Find the Start answered in 2.2 seconds: full marks, +20.

A Find the Start question answered: the timer box above the staff reads 2.2s with +20 beside it.

Most modes means 5-Note Range, Chain, Guide Notes and Chord Inversions. Play the Note and Find the Start score double: you find the key, or count from a guide note, before you answer. Checkpoint, the Challenge tab and mistake reviews don’t score.

Where you see it

Weeks run Monday to Sunday (Malaysia/Singapore time). Points and bests start fresh each Monday, and last week’s stay on show to beat.

  1. During a session

A ⚡ Points card under the staff keeps the running total.

  2. At the end

The session popup shows your points out of the maximum, this week’s total, and your best for that mode this week and last week.

The Session complete popup with an App score box: 172 of 190 points, New best this week, 943 points this week.
  3. On Home

This week’s points beside last week’s, with the difference.

Home: Reading Level, accuracy and day streak, then the App score card with 943 this week, 530 last week and up 413.
  4. In My Progress

A ⚡ App score tab under Progress over time: points per day for each mode, this week against last week.

My Progress on the App score tab: 943 points this week, 530 last week, and a daily points chart for each mode.
  5. On the Leaderboard

The App score side ranks you and your classmates on this week’s points, and lists your best session in each mode (10, 20 or 50 notes). Switch it off and you leave that side; your points are kept.

The Leaderboard on its App score side: this week’s points with the on/off switch and best sessions.

Assignments from your teacher

Sometimes your teacher gives you a specific task to practise.

  1. 1. Open Assignments

If your teacher set you one, you’ll see it in the app.

  2. 2. Press Start

It loads exactly the practice your teacher chose for you.

  3. 3. Finish it

Complete the session. Your teacher sees that it’s done and how you scored.

My Progress, challenges and the leaderboard

Four things under the three-line menu button that show how you're doing and let you compete with classmates. Weekly Challenge, Ranked Practice and the Leaderboard need Pro — ask your teacher if they're locked.

Where they are

Open the menu and the four items sit together, right under Game Mode.

  1. Open the menu

Tap the three-line button at the top right, then any of the four ringed items. A locked item shows a padlock: that account needs Pro.

The app menu with My Progress, Weekly Challenge, Ranked Practice and Leaderboard circled in red.

My Progress

A record of every finished session, updated the moment it ends. Reading Level and the skills breakdown are Pro; the rest is on every account.

  1. The summary

Six figures: Reading Level out of 10, first-try accuracy, total questions, sessions, day streak and average response time, plus one line of advice on what's next.

The top of My Progress: six stat cards, a strong-across-the-board message, the reading skills groups and the first trend chart.
  2. Your reading skills

Three groups — Intervals, Guide Notes, Chord Inversions. Tap one for a bar per interval size, landmark or inversion (needs 5+ first-try answers to count).

The Intervals group expanded, showing a green accuracy bar for 2nds through Octaves.
  3. Progress over time

One chart per mode, one bar per practice day, switching between Accuracy, Response time and, once unlocked, ⚡ App score. Tap a bar for the exact figure and date; below is a worst-first table and a day-by-day log.

The Progress over time charts with a tapped bar showing 85%, 11/09/2026, 17 of 20 first try.

Weekly Challenge

One fixed, server-graded question set each week, identical for everyone, one attempt Monday to Sunday. The format rotates through four: Sprint (2 minutes, most correct wins), Speed 30 (30 questions, fastest time: a wrong answer adds 5 seconds and, from 12/10/2026, a right one takes 1 second off, shown beside the clock), Sudden Death (first mistake or 10 minutes ends it) and The Full Sweep (40 questions across everything Game Mode has taught).

  1. Read the rules, then Start

The first open each week shows this card. Nothing starts until you tap Start — that's your one run for the week.

The Sudden Death rules card: how it works, good to know, and a Start button.
  2. Play it

Looks like normal practice, clock/streak/count along the top. Only the first tap counts — no retries here.

A Sudden Death run in progress: 9:59 on the clock, streak 0, question 1, an interval on the staff and answer buttons below.
  3. Your result

One go a week, so warm up with normal practice first. Your result goes straight onto the leaderboard's challenge tab.

The Weekly Challenge card after playing: already played this week, 27 questions in a row.

Ranked Practice

Ordinary practice that counts: 1 point per correct answer toward the week's leaderboard, plus a bonus for 75%+ or 90%+ sessions. Capped at 60/day — three short sessions beat one long one, which is the habit your teacher is hoping for.

  1. Pick a mode

Chain, Guide Notes, Find the Start or Chord Inversions, 20 questions each.

The Ranked Practice picker with four modes: Chain, Guide Notes, Find the Start and Chord Inversions.
  2. Answer 20 questions

Same screen as the Weekly Challenge. Points bank only when question 20 is answered. Closed early? Pick the same mode again the same day to carry on where you stopped, or tap Resume on Home.

A Ranked Practice Chain session: question 1 of 20, correct 0, an interval on the staff and answer buttons.

Leaderboard

You and your classmates, this week only. The Ranked side has two tabs, Practice points and This week's challenge; the ⚡ App score side ranks App score points. Your own row is highlighted. Needs 4+ players to show a ranking.

Checkpoints and ranks

Two ways the app sums up progress over the long run: a Checkpoint measures it on a given day, a rank tracks it continuously.

Checkpoints

A short check-in the app sets for you every so often: 50 mixed questions in 18 minutes, one go. Not a test you can fail — your score just helps your teacher decide what's next. Checkpoints need Pro.

When one comes up. The first unlocks once a sub-level is passed in each of Guide Notes, Play the Note and Chord Inversions. After that, every 5 further sub-levels — or every 5 sessions once Game Mode is finished. Questions are always set at the hardest sub-level passed, so it's always on material actually learned.

  1. The announcement

  3. Taking it

13 Guide Notes, 10 Find the Start, 13 Chord Inversions, then 14 Play the Note questions, one 18-minute clock. Each section starts on a clean staff, the numbering carries on, and the question you’re on is the blue note. Only the first answer counts, and the score is kept whether time runs out or not.

Ranks

Your rank shows how your reading is going overall, from 🌱 Interval Rookie to 👑 Interval Maestro — worked out from lifetime accuracy, questions answered, and practice streak. Keep all three moving and you climb; let the streak lapse and you can slip back. Unlocks once Levels 1–3 are passed. Your teacher can see it on their roster.

Settings

One panel to change how a session works — clef, interval size, direction, question count — showing only what your mode needs. Changes wait for Apply, and it resets to defaults each time you open the app, so experiment freely.

Opening it

Tap Settings in the header, between the menu button and the theme toggle. Tap again, or anywhere outside, to close it — or press S on a keyboard.

  1. The Settings button

Always in the header, in every mode. It lights up while the panel is open.

What the panel shows in each mode

The top changes per mode; Playback, Difficulty and Display at the bottom stay the same everywhere.

  4. The shared controls

Playback: untick Play sound to silence auto-play and the ▶ button — clicking a note on the staff still plays it, since that's a deliberate check, not the app giving away the answer. Difficulty: Adaptive asks more of the sizes you get wrong most. Display: untick Show notes on staff to answer from sound alone (needs Play sound on) — a reading drill becomes ear training.

The lower part of the Settings panel: Playback with Play sound and Auto-play new question ticked and speed Fast, Adaptive difficulty ticked, Show notes on staff ticked, and the Cancel and Apply buttons underneath.

Apply and Cancel

A changed control doesn't take effect until Apply, which only lights up once something's changed.

  1. Change, then Apply

Tap Apply: the panel closes and a fresh session starts on the new settings. On Challenge, Apply just sets the values — press Start when ready.

The bottom of the Settings panel after changing Session Length: a note reading Apply starts a new session with these settings, and the Apply button lit and circled in red.

  2. Or Cancel

Get unstuck

Try these simple checks. If something still won’t work, tell your teacher.

The mic isn’t hearing my playing
  1. Make sure you chose Allow when the browser asked.
  2. Move the device closer to the piano.
  3. Play the note a bit more firmly and let it ring.
  4. Close other apps that might be using the mic, like video calls.

Still stuck? Ask your teacher or an adult to check it with you.

I played the right note but it said no

Let the pedal up so the last sound fades, and check you played the right octave. In Chord Inversions, roll the chord slowly from the bottom up.

I forgot my password

Ask your teacher to set a new one from their dashboard — no email needed.

What does “only the first answer counts” mean?

Whether you got each note right on your first guess. Fix a wrong note afterwards and you should — it's how you learn — but it won't change that question's score.

Chrome says an application is stopping it from safely connecting

If the message mentions Fortinet, a school or office firewall is inspecting web traffic and Chrome refuses to trust it. This is not the app, and every secure site on that network is affected. Switch to mobile data or home Wi-Fi, or ask IT to allow interval-hero.app. Avoid tapping Advanced and proceeding: that lets the firewall read your login.
